  • accurate use of phonetic knowledge (letter-sound relationships, word patterns)
  • use context of the text to make sense of it
  • recognize high frequency words
  • self-correct miscues
  • identify words to describe setting, and characters
  • spell words phonetically
  • present ideas clearly with some supporting details
