Procedure

Provide a student prompt for reading/writing (topic=ants, audience=preschool students, and purpose=to share some poems with younger students miles away).
Discuss all of the steps listed on the activity page with the student prior to reading Tad. Include the student questions at the bottom of the activity page, for these imply student outcomes.
Teach the functions of point and click and the use of the "back" button.
Support the student in the reading and writing process as needed. Note use of cueing systems (especially the letter-sound associations in decoding text, as well as in spelling when typing answers to the questions).
Encourage the student to share the story and poem with others in order to provide numerous opportunities to practice decoding skills.
Save the poem in an electronic student folder (if available) for repeated readings. The student can bookmark or print a copy of the poem.
Literature Connection: Shared or paired reading of Two Bad Ants.
