NAME of Program GRADE Level DESCRIPTION
Wilson Reading System 4th - adult WRS is a step-by-step structured system designed to directly teach decoding and encoding (spelling) skills. Its sequence is based on six common syllable types. Sounds are taught only as they relate to these fundamental syllable types. Ample teacher and student materials support the teaching/learning process. Although the program is typically used with students with dyslexia, some of the teaching techniques are useful for all students in the process of acquiring decoding and encoding skills.
Picture Reading Literacy Project Ungraded This project is designed to increase the literacy skills of students with mental retardation, and/or severe multiple disabilities who have been unable to learn to read words skillfully enough to read simple 2-3 word instructions. The procedures outlined in the program enable teachers and assistants to teach their students to read instructions that use picture/word symbols. Students then have the opportunity to perform the recipe task they have read. A Picture Writing Curriculum is included as an adjunct to the Reading Curriculum. Students arrange picture symbols into sentences as the teacher models and dictates sentences.

Below is a list of phonetically-controlled storybooks intended to support students' efforts in acquiring decoding skills. Students need ample opportunities to practice in books they can read independently, and teachers need to reinforce phonics instruction as they share literature with students. Connecting decoding instruction to practice in highly decodable text that contains the sounds and symbols taught is but ONE of MANY recommended components of a comprehensive approach to teaching early reading that includes varied and abundant printed materials, active learning, and the development of written and spoken language through highly engaging activities (Adams).
