Excerpts from 02-03 Annual Report

The continuing vitality of the faculty of the College of Arts and Sciences was evident in their professional accomplishments this past year. Nine faculty published books, mounted one-person shows, or curated exhibits:

  • Ivan Brady, The Time at Darwin's Reef: Poetic Explorations in Anthropology and History, Walnut Creek, California: AltaMira.
  • Cynthia Clabough exhibited her sabbatical project, "My Mother's Name is Anna, her Maiden Name was Lanzo," in Tyler Art Gallery, Oct. - Nov. 2002.
  • Maureen Curtin, Out of Touch: Mapping Skin Tropes in Identities in Woolf, Ellison, Pynchon, and Acker, Routledge, 2002.
  • Cynthia Clabough curated a show for Suzanne Bellamy entitled "Trading Places: Fusion and the Commerce of Form," at the Northampton Art Center, Northampton, Massachusetts, June 2003.
  • Karel Kurst-Swanger, Violence in the Home: Multidisciplinary Perspectives, Oxford University Press, 2003.
  • Fritz Messere co-revised Broadcasting, Cable, the internet and Beyond for its fifth edition.
  • Professor Emeritus Sewall Oertling curated and wrote the catalog for "The Henricksen Collection of Chinese Painting." This exhibition was organized in conjunction with the Herbert E. Johnson Museum of Fine Art at Cornell University, where the paintings were exhibited in Fall 2002.
  • An exhibition of the work of Juan Perdiguero, entitled "Juan Perdiguero: Bestiario," was shown at the ACA Gallery, Atlanta, Georgia, June 2002, and Galeria Metropolitana, Barcelona, Spain, Sept.-Oct. 2002. A catalogue entitled Juan Perdiguero: Bestiario was published in conjunction with a traveling exhibition under the same name, organized by the Caja Duero Art Space, Salamanca, Spain.
  • Evgeny Steiner, Avant-garde and the Construction of the New Many, Moscow: New Literary Review Press, 2002.
  • One faculty member, Dr. Geraldine Forbes, received a prestigious Fulbright fellowship for research in India, 2003-2004. (She therefore declined an American institute of Indian Studies grant for research for the same period!)
A number of additional faculty received awards or other recognition for their professional work:
  • Dr. Robert Ballentine, Edward Lonky, Jacqueline Reihman, and Richard Zakin received the SUNY Chancellor's Recognition for Research and Creative Activity.
  • Laura Brown, Linda Loomis and Brad Korbesmeyer received the President's Award for Advising.
  • Ann W. Bunch was promoted to the status of "Fellow" by the American Academy of Forensic Science.
  • Nola Heidlebaugh received the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Community Service Award from Alpha Phi Alpha fraternity.
  • John Smith's paper, entitled "Bush and Gore on Oprah Winfrey or the 'Oprah-fication' of American Presidential Candidates," was ranked as the top paper in the Political Communications Interest Group of the Eastern Communication Association this year.
  • David Thomas received an award for "Unwavering Support and Commitment to the Programs and Students of the Office of Learning Services."
  • Timothy Thurber received the Chancellor's Award for Excellence in Teaching
  • Kate Timm received the Dick Blick Painting Award, Cooperstown Art Association, Cooperstown.
  • Norman Weiner is the President of the National Collegiate Honors Council.
In 2002-2003 there was also increased faculty productivity in the number of conference and other invited presentations-144-and a dramatic increase in the number of refereed publications, book chapters, and creative publications-93 as compared to 59 the year before. This could be a function of increased numbers of junior faculty in the early stages of their career, increased activity among the faculty across the board, or both. In addition, faculty reported 32 other publications, at least 11 web publications, and participation in 20 off-campus exhibits, concerts, recitals or other performances. Fourteen faculty served as officers or in other official capacities in professional organizations.

New and continuing grants supported the efforts of faculty and students, as well as contributing, through indirect funds, to the general operations of the College of Arts and Sciences and the institution as a whole. As the following list demonstrates, grants supported activities ranging from individual and collaborative research projects to projects involving students and the applications of research:
