ISC 110 Course Syllabus ¹ (3 credit hours)

Course Topics include

• Binary, Octal, Decimal and Hexadecimal Number Systems
• Data, Information, and Knowledge
• Representing Information with Metadata
• Organizing information
• Networked Information (Web) Tools and Security
• Social, Ethical, and Legal implications of Internets and digitized information systems
• Desktop applications
• Relational databases
• Student Web Page development (ongoing throughout the semester)

Learning Objectives

• develop web pages using networked tools and web-based languages
• use software application tools (spreadsheet, word processing, presentation)
• write SQL commands for single and multiple relational database tables
• explain the basic components of computer systems
• create a simple relational database
• explain the client-server model
• use information technology tools to gather and evaluate electronic information sources for research

Course Materials

• There are no required texts.
• This course does not use Blackboard
• The course web page, at http://www.cs.oswego.edu/~wender/Classes/110/, contains slides, notes, assignments and web references.

Grading

• several in-class lab assignments and homework assignments - 40%
• 2 in-class exams and several unannounced in-class quizzes - 40%
• final: research project with paper and powerpoint presentation - 20%
• Letter Grades
  A 90-100 | B 80-89 | C 70-79 | D 60-69 | E below 60
• Regardless of the final average score, you must receive a passing percentage on both the exam and assignment portions of this course in order to receive a passing grade for the course.
• Assignments are due at the end of class on the due date. Late assignments are penalized 10% per day, every day (including weekends).
  • An assignment more than 5 days late will not be scored, but it should be handed in. I may use it as an aid in determining your overall grade.
• You will be required to demo many of your assignments to me.
• Requests to make up missed quizzes/tests/exams will be permitted only when you have made prior arrangements with me.
• From time to time, modifications to readings, assignments, due dates, etc., will occur. You are responsible for keeping apprised of the content of the course website(s).
• Study materials, homework assignments, in-class assignments, test dates, etc., will be distributed in class.
• Classroom discussion and questions are encouraged. Classroom presentations are required.

  Evidence that you have have not cited sources, or that another or others have contributed significantly to your work, will result, at a minimum, in receiving the negative of the maximum value for the assignment, and at a maximum, in failing the course, or worse.

Attendance

• The undergraduate catalog states, "Regular class attendance is obligatory ..." Note: administrative policies suggest that instructors drop students who have excessive unexcused absences.
• Inform me if you must miss a class - before the occurrence if possible. A verifying note will be required in most cases.
• Attendance is mandatory. Your grade will be reduced by 5 percentage points for each unexcused absence from class.
• Habitual and/or undue lateness may be considered an unexcused absence from class.
