The first Senior Research Associate from Moscow State University, Dr. Ivan Zassoursky is from the Faculty of Journalism and will be in residence at the SUNY Center on Russia from September 15 to January 1.
Dr. Zassoursky received his Ph.D. in 1998 with a thesis titled, Russian Mass Media in Conditions of Global Transformation Processes: The Formation of the New Information System and the Role of the Media in Political Life. Dr. Zassoursky this year won the coveted Moscow State University Shuvalov prize for his book entitled, The Mass Media in the Second Republic, a book on the current state of the media in the Russian Republic. The Shuvalov award is presented annually by Moscow State University for the best academic publication of the year.
Dr. Zassoursky is not just an academic. He has worked as a Reporter, Parliamentary Correspondent and Editor at the Studinformo News Agency, a Correspondent for "Nezavisimaya Gazeta" daily newspaper and its Economics Editor. He was the Political and Media Advisor to Vice-Prime Minister Boris Nemtsov. This year he has served as Elections Manager for the Union of Right Forces parliamentary elections campaign. He is well versed in the real politics of the mass media.
In 1998, Dr. Zassoursky started an Internet project on literature at http://www.litera.ru/ and has published articles, essays, and book reviews in the Internet magazine "Russian Journal" at http://www.russ.ru/.
The SUNY Center on Russia and the United States opened its doors January 1, 2000. The Center is located in the SUNY Central Administration building at State University Plaza in Albany, NY. Robert Gosende, former Cultural Attache to Moscow, is the Executive Director of the Center and Dr. Barbara Jancar-Webster, Distinguished SUNY Professor, is the Academic Director.
