First Year Peer Advisor Job Description

The First Year Peer Advisors will work closely with an assigned First Year Advisor and will help provide information, referrals, academic support and transitional assistance to first year students.

The First Year Faculty Advisor will be responsible for providing academic advisement and transitional support to a group of 25 students for the Fall and Spring semesters. They will meet with each student at least three times in the Fall and two times in the Spring.

First Year Peer Advisors will work closely with the Faculty Advisor to enhance the advisement experience.

Specific responsibilities of the First Year Peer Advisors include to:

• participate in advanced training during the Spring semester with FY Advisors and other FY Peer Advisors
• participate in a training program prior to the arrival of new students
• coordinate a meeting with assigned students during Opening Weekend (First Year Advisor would co-facilitate the meeting)
• serve as a resource and referral person for first year advisees
• facilitate and document communication with first year advisees on a frequent basis in both the Fall and Spring semesters (by listserv, email, phone and letters)
• assist FY Advisor in coordinating regular meetings with advisees in both the Fall and Springs semesters
• coordinate one workshop/program in the Fall semester for first year students (career and/or major based within discipline)
• meet regularly with other FY Peer Advisors

First Year Peer Advisors will enroll in GST 101/303 in the Fall semester and will receive 3 credits (letter graded) for their involvement in the First Year Advisement Program. A minimum cumulative GPA of 2.5 is required. Students must have completed one semester at Oswego in order to apply. Students must be in good standing with the college to participate in this program.
