Like all other SUNY colleges and university centers, Oswego has modified its general education program to incorporate a set of system-wide requirements mandated by the SUNY Board of Trustees in December 1998. This program description applies to incoming freshmen for the fall of 2000.

Advanced Expository Writing

Five courses designated by major department, including at least one that emphasizes oral communication skills.

NOTES

General Education courses may not be taken pass/fail.
One course can be used to satisfy two (or more) requirements.
Courses that satisfy requirements for the major or minor can also be used to satisfy General Education requirements.
General Education courses (with the exception of Intellectual Issues) can be taken off-campus, as long as approval is secured in advance.
The General Education program outlined above applies to all degree candidates (BA, BS, BFA).
Passing scores on college-level competency exams (e.g., Advanced Placement or CLEP) can be used to earn credits and, where appropriate, satisfy General Education requirements.
Wiaver exams are given seveal times each year in the three Basic Skills areas (passing one of these exams satisfies a requirement by earns no credits for the student).
Although most General Education courses are at the lower-division level, some -- Intellectual Issues and most Advanced Expository Writing -- are designed to be upper-division experiences.
Math proficiency must be demonstrated by the student (grade of 80 or higher on Course II or Course III Regents Exam; or equivalent) before he or she enrolls in any General Education math course at Oswego.
