First Year Academic Advisor Job Description
Each First Year Academic Advisor will be responsible for all academic
advisement of 25 students during their first year at Oswego State and
for working closely with and evaluating one Peer Advisor. Responsibilities
include the following:
- Making initial contact with students following students' decision
to come to Oswego State, introducing him/herself as the student's advisor.
This can include a phone call, a letter and/or email correspondence.
- Serving as an informational source for students and their parents as
necessary during the summer.
- Meeting with group of advisees once during Opening Weekend (with
Peer Advisor).
- Scheduling at least three meetings with the student during the
student's first semester. Things to accomplish at these meetings would
include:
- establishing the advisor/advisee relationship
- offering information about general education and the over all curriculum
- offering support through the major/career exploration process
- provide important resource information regarding academic
policies and procedures
- Meeting with the student at least twice in the second semester to
discuss issues such as:
- evaluation of performance
- discussion of strategies to improve performance
- exploration of educational and career goals
- information about opportunities on campus such as internships and
study abroad
- educational planning for the following three years
- Working closely with a peer advisor (see attached job description).
First Year Advisors will be selected during the Fall semester prior to
the academic year that they will serve. All First Year Advisors will be
required to attend mandatory training sessions which will be offered at a
variety of times throughout the year. In addition, First Year Advisors will
be encouraged to consider becoming advisors for the first year orientation
programs in the summer.
Full time faculty or professional staff members on term continuing or
permanent appointment may apply. Compensation: All First Year Advisors
will have access to money to subsidize travel up to $1,000.
