Assignment #2               C S C 1 0 1                             Due Date: 1/9/04

Mohammadi                                                                  60 Points

Objectives

There are three separate parts to this assignment.  The 1st is about using the resources on the net, requiring you to search for information both locally (Oswego's website) and globally in the WWW.  The 2nd requires you to update your web page for this course reinforcing steps learned in the lab.  The 3rd part here puts to practice what you have learned about computer hardware in class and from the book.  For Part #1 and #3, use Word'2002 to type your responses; this will be your initial task requiring this word processor.  Make sure that your printouts are clearly marked with your name.

Part #1 - Searching for information via the Internet (20 Pts.)

Use WWW to find the information specified here and answer the questions required.  Type up the answers.  Print the web pages, only if requested.  One or two printed pages will be generated in response to this part.  Be sure to include the questions when answering them.  Without the details (where and how), you will at best receive 10 points for this part.

In each case, provide a concise and complete answer to the following questions:

  • What was the URL of the page with the information?
  • What search engine, if any, did you use?
  • Describe the process that you followed in each case to find the information.

Oswego related questions:

    1. What is my (your instructor) official title at SUNY Oswego?
    2. When is the library open on the weekends during the regular semesters?
    3. How late is the IT lab in Snygg basement open on Mondays and Wednesdays during the regular semesters?
    4. Find one of your Oswego friend's email address, local address and phone number.

Global questions:

1.      What is the address of the homepage the school that a friend of yours is attending?

2.      Find information regarding Sesame Street?  Print this page (just one page).

3.      What are the names of your representatives in the Congress of the United States (i.e. members of the House and the Senate)?  Do these individuals have any information available on the Internet (i.e. their own web sites), if they do, what is the URL?

4.      What is the most recent estimated resident population in the United State by the U.S. census bureau?  What was the date for this estimation?

Part #2 - Updating your webpage (20 Pts.)

Add one additional image and a Favorite link section with at least 3 links of interest to your webpage.  You need to follow the instructions from lab2 and 3 in using the text editor pico to make the changes here to your 101.html page on Rocky; this file is located in your

public-html directory. You will also reinforce what you learned about other tools, such as, the scanner, and PhotoShop and FTP programs.  I will load your web page to grade it; nothing needs to be turned in this case.

1.      In order to add a new image you will need to follow the instruction from lab#3 to scan a new image in, FTP the image to Rocky, make the image file public, and add the appropriate image tag (<IMG>…</IMG>) to your 101 web page.  You should already have one image tag in your web page placed in there during lab3, use that as model for putting this tag in and place it right after the existing one separating them with a break tag (<BR>).

2.      Add a favorite links section at the bottom of your 101 web page with at least three links in it.  This entry needs to go before the </HTML> tag.  You need a second-level heading tag (<H2>…</H2>) for the heading of this section.  You will then need the address tag (<A>…</A>) for each of the new links.  Follow the instructions from class and use the Course Related Links section already in your web page as a model for creating this new section.
