MABEL CORLETT'S CLASSIC 4-PLY RIBBED SOCKS

MATERIALS: 2 or 3 balls Nomotta Regia 4 (depending on desired length);
2.75 mm (#12; #2 American) double-pointed needles. [Note: The Regia 4 yarn
comes in 50 g skeins, with approximately 210 meters per skein. It is
interchangeable with most sock/fingering weight yarns.)

GAUGE: Test in stockinette stitch; 34 st = 10 cm (4").

LEG: Cast on 75 sts and divide on 3 needles. Work in K2/P1 rib until leg is 6.5 cm (2.5") shorter than desired length to floor.

HEEL: Stop 18 sts before end of last round. Sl these 18 sts, plus the following 19 sts, on to 1 needle for the heel, and divide the rem 38 sts (the instep) sts evenly on 2 needles. Now work back and forth on heel sts as follows: Row 1 (rs): K1, [S1, K1] to end. Row 2 (ws): S1, P35, S1. Repeat these 2 rows for 6.5 cm (2.5"), ending with Row 1.

TURNING THE HEEL: Row 0 (ws): S1, P18, P2 tog, turn. Row 1 (rs): S1, K3, SSK, turn. Row 2 (ws): S1, P4, P2tog, turn. Row 3 (rs): S1, K5, SSK, turn. Continue to work in this way, with 1 more st on each row, until all the sts have been worked, ending after a rs row.

GUSSET: K up 1 st in each of the outside loops up 1 side of the heel flap (about 18 sts); put the instep sts on 1 needle and pattern across in K2/P1 rib; K up the same number of extra sts down the other side of the heel flap; K to centre of heel. S rem heel sts to first needle; this (centre of heel bottom) is the beg of rounds. Round 1: a. Needle 1:K; b. Needle 2: K2/P1 rib; c. Needle 3: K. Round 2: a. Needle 1: K to 2 sts rem, K2tog, K1; b. Needle 2: K2/P1 rib; c. Needle 3: K1, SSK, K to end. Repeat these 2 rounds until 74 sts rem.

FOOT: K Needles 1 & 3 and rib Needle 2, until foot length to back of heel is 6.5 cm (2.5") less than desired finished length. Stop rib pattern now.

TOE: If necessary, rearrange sts so that there are 18 sts on Needle 1, 37 sts on Needle 2, and 19 sts on Needle 3. Round 1: K. Round 2: a. Needle 1: K to 3 sts rem, K2tog, K1; b. Needle 2: K1, SSK, K to 3 sts rem, K2tog, K1; c. Needle 3: K1, SSK, K to end. Repeat these 2 rounds until 16 sts rem. Graft together.
