BRIGGS & LITTLE'S HEAVY SOCK PATTERN

CHILDREN'S SIZES


SIZES: Child 8 (10) -- length of leg: 7 (8) inches or 18 (20) cm;
                       length of foot: 4.5 (4.75) ins. or 11 (12) cm.

MATERIALS:  4 oz. (113 gm.) Briggs & Little 100% Wool Yarn 2/8, 2 ply or
                 Homespun style, plus small amount for contrast stripe if 
                 desired.
            1 set double pointed 3.25 mm (American size 4).

TENSION:  To be measured on 3.25 mm needles in stocking stitch,
          12 sts, 16 rows = 2 inches or 5 cm.
          If you do not obtain the correct tension, use larger or smaller 
          needles as indicated.

Cast on 39 (42) sts, equally on each of 3 needles. Join. Rib *K2, P1) 
around. Rib six rows around in main color; rib six rows around in contrast 
color; rib six rows around in main color; rib six rows around in contrast 
color. Continue rib in main color until leg measures 7" (8").

TO MAKE HEEL: Turn work and P back 21 sts. Divide rem 18 (21) sts on 2 
needles (size 8 -- 9 sts and 9 sts.) and (size 10 -- 11 sts and 10 sts.) 
Do not work these sts. Working on 21 heel sts. Turn.
Row 1: K1, Sl1 across row ending with K sts. Turn.
Row 2: P across.
Rep these 2 rows until heel measures 2.25" (2.5") ending with P row.

TO TURN HEEL: 
Row 1: K1, Sl1 for 13 sts, then Sl1, K1, PSSO. Turn.
Row 2: Sl1, P5, P2tog. Turn.
Row 3: (Sl1, K1) 3 times, Sl1, K1, PSSO. Turn.
Rep Rows 2 and 3 until 7 sts rem, ending with a P row.

TO MAKE INSTEP: K across 7 sts with right side of work facing, then pick 
up and K 11(12) sts along side of heel on 1st needle. Place 18 (21) sts 
divided at start of heel on one needle (front of sock) and rib (K2, P1) 
as before. With other needle pick up and K 11 (12) sts on other side of 
heel, then K3 sts from first needle to make up 3rd needle.
1st needle 15 (16) sts; 2nd needle 18 (21) sts; 3rd needle 14 (15) sts.
Row 1: K across 1st needle; rib across 2nd needle; K across 3rd needle.
Row 2: 1st needle: K to last 3 sts, K2tog, K1;
       2nd needle: Rib across;
       3rd needle: K1, Sl1,K1, PSSO, K to end of needle.
Repeat these two rows until 9 (10) sts rem on first needle, 18 (21- sts 
still on 2nd needle and (do not decrease on 3rd needle last time around 
-- keep the e9 sts on the 3rd needle) 9 (9) sts. (Size 8 -- 36 sts around; 
size 10 -- 49 sts around.) -- continue knitting, keeping rib on 2nd or 
front needle until foot measures 5.5 (5.75) or desired length form back 
of heel, ending on 3rd needle.

TO SHAPE TOE: Divide sts so you have 1/2 remaining on front needle and the 
other half divided on other two needles. (eg. 36 (40) sts = 18 (20) 
front -- 9 (10) each side.). Note: On size 10 -- Sl1 sts off 2nd needle 
onto 3rd needle.
Row 1: 1st needle: K to last 3 sts, K2tog, K1;
       2nd needle: (do not rib when shaping toe) K1, Sl1, K1, PSSO, k to 
                   last 3 sts, K2tog, K1;
       3rd needle: K1, Sl1, K1, PSSO, K to end of needle.
Row 2: Knit around all 3 needles.
Repeat these two rows until 4 sts rem on 1st needle and 3rd needle and 8 sts 
rem on 2nd needle. With 3rd needle K4 sts from 1st needle leaving 8 sts 
on each of 2 needles (16 sts in total.) Break off yarn about 18" long, 
thread through darning needle to weave or graft toe.
