Part of the accompanying materials for a presentation on mosaic knitting to the Twisted Stitches of Central New York Knitting Guild, by Esther Smith Bozak on December 6, 1997.

When learning and exploring a new technique or pattern stitch, we knitters often find ourselves making many sample swatches, most of which find their way to the dark recesses of some closet. I have tried, with this trio of projects, to find ways in which sample swatches can be put to good use. Each of these three projects uses the Simulated Basketweave mosaic pattern stitch (from Barbara Walkers' Charted Knitting Designs), given below, worked as a strip to the specified length. The patterns have been designed such that no specific gauge is essential if using worsted weight yarns and size 8 or 9 needles (or the size you find normal for you to use with worsted weight yarn.) The finished strip should be around 4-5" wide; even if your strip is a bit wider or narrower, it can still be used with good results. So don't fret much about the gauge; concentrate more on becoming comfortable with mosaic knitting and having some fun along the way!

NOTE: Until our scanner is fixed, I am unable to add in the chart for the Simulated Basketweave pattern stitch. You can find this pattern stitch in Barbara Walker's Charted Knitting Designs, newly reprinted by Schoolhouse Press.
