PROVENCE mercerized cotton yarn...125 grams/256 yards...Egyptian Cotton
stockinette stitch gauge: 5 sts = 1"
16" circular Addi Turbo needles
.....# 1 for the ribbing
.....# 4 for the hat
# 4 double pointed needles will be necessary for the top closure.
With # 1 needle, cast on 100 sts. Join. Work in *k1, p1* rib for 4 rounds.
Increase to 150. (*k2, m1* repeating around) Work with the # 4 needle for
the rest of the hat.
I figured the increases according to the neat rule posted on the ARANLIST
in March 1999...increase as many sts as each cable crosses.... I am aiming
for a 22" hat...the gauge on this cotton I figured would turn out to be 5
sts = 1", so a 22" hat would be 110 sts BUT I then added in all the cable
crossings and got 150.
Follow this chart for 4"
l = knit
- = purl
t = twisted knit (knit the back of the stitch)

TOP: Flat topped pill-box shape
I decided that a 20" circumference hat (which mine worked out to as I knit
along) will have a diameter of a little over 6", using the lovely "pi"
number in honor of EZ. When decreasing the top knit-in-the-round, this
would translate into knitting 3" worth of rounds, or 18-20 rounds, as my
knitted gauge in ss worked out to 6 rounds=1".
OK...I have to get from 150 sts to 6 sts in 20 rounds.
So, here we go:
Rnd 1: PURL around on the outside decreasing as follows: 3 sts over every
PLAIT CABLE (has the 6 RC and 6 LC in it) and 2 sts over every
CROSSED CABLE (has the has the front and back knit crosses in
Rnd 2: k
Rnd 3: *k8, k2tog* repeat this around (as for rounds below)
