This thing really gets me down...imagine how the people over there are feeling. First having been accustomed to a degree of freedom they've never experienced before, and waiting for still better times. Now all that has been taken away from them, for good (that's how I believe most of them are thinking). All my historybooks tell me that things like this usually leads to bloodshed. If the new regime are going to keep things under control, they're going to do it the hard way, since I can't imagine there's any other way for them. Whenever there's a demonstration -and there will be-, they are bound to gome down on it, and come down on it hard. And that, my friends, means trouble. On the TV-news here in Finland, maybe twenty people (in Moscow) were intervieved, and all but one thought this was really terrible. The one disagreeing guy said something along the lines of "At last, I've been waiting for this. Now it's our turn". Needless to say, the other interviewees (?) reacted quite violently at this...but if the ratio is even 20:1 against (that's hardly right anyway), there's no way things are going the way the new regime want them to go. With a bunch of fanatics closing on 80 years of age (or whatever), I seriously doubt they care what they do. They haven't got that many years to live anyway. Maybe they feel like accomplishing something *big* ;-( Well, this is their last chance. Aug. 20 th 23.00 GMT. Reflections on what the actors in the current soviet drama wants : Apparently Gorbatjov had a problem deciding whether he should be part of the reform movement or part of the old communist guard. I find it hard to believe that he could believe some sort of half way solution could be found ... either the press is free or it is not ... either there is one ruling party or there are many parties ...either there is democracy or there is not .... If Gorbatjov saw his mission as confusing the hardliners , making way for democratic forces he was a nb. 1. success . If he believed in the middle road between dictatorship and democracy he himself must have been confused. Having enough of Gorbatjovs Glasnost and Perestroijka hardliners decided to remove him ... But besides from a longing for the nice old ordered yesterday they seem to lack the stomach of 'good' dictatorship ! The first 8 hours of the coup was less than excellent executed. a) Why wasnt Yeltsin taken also - along with the mayor of Leningrad and Moscow and A L L other pominent proreform personage. b) Why wasnt a die-hard communist military unit kept in reserve in Leningrad and Moscow for a 'chinese solution' to demonstrators. c) Why wasnt all military units in ( at least ) Leningrad and Moscow equipped with enforcers ( SS-style ) to make sure they always knows which way to go ? Then comes the plan for the next 5 - 10 years , where the the old guard have all odds against them : In the long run I doubt that dictatorship works in a hightech - society . Economic progress takes openness, free access to information, free flow of money and freedom to travel. All opposites to oldfashioned dictatorship. So if economic progress takes free minds ( and at least not slaves ) the conspirators can succeed in restoring dictatorship only by accepting the USSR as a developing country. Basicly : if they have hopes of improvement in the economy - they must relax dictatorship - As Gorbatjov did - with the known anarchy/ democracy as a consequence. And they are all against that solution ! If their only ambition was to slow down the process of reform too keep the priviledges in their lifetime ,this platform looks shaky compared to a idealistic and determined people set on democracy. Internally the conspirators now comes down with all sorts of illnesses ( rumours includes GMT. 22.00 Jasov,Paulov and Kritjujkov ) . Statistically speaking I feel that 'illnesses' are running high in the junta --- perhaps some of the conspirators agree with the arguments of above and havent got the stomach for the coming shootout ? If Bush, his lapdog Brian Mulroney, Major et al had done more for Gorbachev at the G7 summit, he likely would still be in power. Now, we face the possibility of a long slide back into a cold war -- or worse. I will start by apologizing to Mr. Shevardnadze whose many warnings of an impending coupe I thought to be no more than political grand standing. Apparently corpses, might, when left lying in the morgue for a period of time, suddenly sit bolt upright and scare the living daylights out of anyone nearby. The movement is supposedly caused by gases, given off by the natural process of putrefaction, in the gut. And that is exactly how I see the coupe. Now that the Kremlin Trolls are sitting bolt upright, in charge, what on earth are they going to do? To maintain power they will have to deliver something other than a damn good fright. They have nothing to offer the people. If anything, their actions are only a further squandering of resources. They will not be able to make the economy function by decree nor do they have a new ideology to motivate the people with. This coupe will collapse in a matter of weeks, if not days. There is simply too much working against it. The reformists are too entrenched....too many republics are opposed......only a few months back, parts of the country were shut down by strikes protesting the slowness -not the direction- of reform......the military is as politically fractured as the society it is expected to control. Internationally and domestically the coupe's leaders are isolated. These people are living in their own "group think" fantasy. Either because of desperation or stupidity they have totally disregarded the results of several democratic elections and numerous inter-republic treaties and convinced themselves that they are needed and that they are right. They will not succeed. I have no opinion to offer on just how much turmoil and destruction we will see before the coupe ends. I can only pray that the matter will be resolved with a minimum of bloodshed. There is a silver lining to this coupe. The worst fear of the reformers has finally surfaced, it can be dealt with in the open. When the stench clears we will see the beginning of real political and economic reform. There will be no more of the on again off again. The republics will no longer have to look over their shoulder to see if the Kremlin approves. Yanaen (?) stated the plotters want to arrest Rissian President. They are expected to take actions while during this night. The medicine is gathered for the RWH defenders. Up to now the putschers control the center of Moscow: Red Square, Manez Square, Ochotny Rjad to the KGB buildngs and some separate buildings like Institute of the Marxism History and Theory, Procurator Office and mostly all the mass-media offices -- TASS, APN, TV. The people defence troops are kept forming. Biris Yeltsin is now periodically delivering speaches via trasmitter mounted in the RWH. It seems to be the amatuer AM SW transiver (call-sign R3A) working now 24 hours a day at the frequences 14175, 13640 and 7040 kHz. There also middle waves tramitter at the wave length 1500m (c-s R3B) but it is probably receiveable only inside Moscow. The frequencies are slowly shifting to counteract impossed jamming. People are raising barricades near the RWH. Supporters are comming there from the nearest undergraund station. All the front entrances to the building are blocked now. The rear side is packed by people. There are also several Red Cross buses. Will the putschers shot in them?
