Carl Gustav Jung
1875-1961

[Danesi]    Swiss psychiatrist who believed that the unconscious mind consisted of two interacting dimensions:    the personal unconscious, the repressed feelings and thoughts developed during an individual's life, and the collective unconscious, those inherited feelings, thoughts, and memories shared by all humanity. He coined the term archetype to refer to the latter. Archetypes manifest themselves as recurring symbols in cultures the world over.
