COURSE GOALS:
1. To learn the basic facts in understanding perception.
2. To be aware of how perception influences everyday life.
3. To learn the various methodologies involved in perception research.
4. To experience various perceptual experiences first-hand.
5. To continue to improve your written and oral communication skills.
6. To link course information to previously learned material in psychology (including stats and research methods).
RESEARCH PROJECTS: A major part of this course will be designing and conducting research in perception. You will work in groups, but will be writing individual APA-style articles when you are finished. I will be
providing some topics that you can pursue, or you may have a research idea of your own. Also, according to new SUNY guidelines, you will have to complete an on-line course on the ethical treatment of human subjects. Details will be given in class. In order to facilitate conducting the research, I have devised this schedule for the completion of the major parts of the research process:
Oct 6: Initial literature review Nov 7: Consent and transmittal forms completed
Oct 20: Draft of introduction section completed Dec 10: APA articles of paper due (at
start of class!)
Dec 10 and 12: Oral Presentations
NOTE: Social loafing will not be tolerated. Each person in the group must be active. Alert me of any problems that may occur. Don’t assume things will get better “later”. I reserve the right to disband groups if problems arise.
LATE POINTS: Late points will be deducted for each CALENDAR DAY that the assignment is late. Late points vary on the maximum point value of the assignment: 0-10 pts = -2 pts; 11-30 pts = -3pts; 31-100 pts = -5 pts.
PLAGIARISM: Plagiarism is a type of academic
dishonesty. Plagiarism is essentially the theft of another person's ideas
and/or written work. This includes both published and unpublished work. When you include information in your
research paper, you must cite the source. (I will remind you how to do
citations, according to APA style). The penalty for plagiarism is an E for your
course grade. Please refer to the 2002-2003 SUNY-Oswego Student Handbook (p
151) for further details concerning academic dishonesty.
