Course Description

The course will be project-oriented in that each you will be required to engage in a modest, meaningful research project. Projects will consist of explorations of a problem domain by means of LISP or Prolog programs which represent elements of the problem domain and provide opportunities for experimentation and exploration.

Students will be responsible for crafting a research project from a collection of "suggestions " . Regarding these research projects, emphasis will be on defining progress and demonstrating progress in a very public forum--on a Web page. All required required project elements are to be made available on the Web page on a regular basis. The projects, by means of oral presentation and Web site inspection, will be evaluated three times throughout the semester.

A research paper based on the research project is also to be written. This paper is to take the form required by some well known real world academic journal for which the work appears to be appropriate.

Structured peer reviews of both oral and web presentations of the research projects, as well as the associated research papers, will be featured in the course.

Topics of significance to Artificial Intelligence which complement the classical ideas presented in the first course will be featured in readings, lectures, discussions, and quizzes.

Main Course Objectives

  • To craft, engage in, and summarize the results of a research project which falls within the realm of AI and which explicitly addresses and implicitly integrates (1) problem formulation, (2) background research, (3) programming (either LISP or Prolog, (4) experimentation/exploration of the problem through your program, (5) methodical, constant, incremental conceptual articulation of your agenda and accomplishments, and (6) a culminating appraisal of the state of the work completed which features a critical analysis of the work.

  • To develop a Web site which reflects your work on the project.

  • To prepare and present oral reports on your research project.

  • To write a "pretend paper " for "pretend submission " to a real scholarly journal of your choice.

  • To engage in the evaluation of projects and papers of your classmates.

Requirements

  1. You are required to satisfactorily complete a term project which will include writing, programming, and Web site development.
  2. You are required to satisfactorily complete a term paper.
  3. You are required to regularly attend class and to participate in all class related activities. These activities include receiving "topic of the week presentations " , engaging in discussions, taking quizes, browsing classmate project sites, giving oral presentations on your project, and evaluating the projects and papers of your classmates.

Grading

Your grade will be determined in large part by the points your receive as a measure of the successful completion of the following activities.
  • Class attendance points, based on your presence.    (3 points per class)
  • Quiz points, based on your performance.    (maximum 10 points per quiz)
  • Peer evaluation points, based on your participation.    (1 point for each oral presentation review, 2 points for each web site review, maximum 10 points for each formal paper reivew, 2 points for each informal paper reivew)
  • Research Project points, based on peer evaluations, as well as my own evaluations, of your oral presentations and your Web sites.    ((30+50)+(30+70)+(30+90)=300 points)
  • Research Paper points, based on my evaluations of your paper, which incorporate input from your peers.    (150 points)
