Formalities

Role in the Curriculum

Semiotics features signs, which in their various forms can be viewed as hyperflexible knowledge representations that inform investigations in lingustics, anthropology, philosophy, the arts, education, and so on. The two independent roots of semiotics in Saussure's linguistics (structural linguistics) and Peirce's philosophy (pragmatism) play key roles understanding various aspects of cognition. Moreover, recognition of the relevance of cognitive science to semiotics over the past two decades has spawned the subfield of cognitive semiotics. Interestingly, the structural/poststructural modes of thinking in semiotics mirror, in abstract terms, the symbolic/embodied modes of thinking in artificial intelligence. In light of all of this, semiotics broadens the perspective of cognitive science students in ways that are highly relevant to the field of study.
