Six Syllable Types: Vowel+R
1. Vowel+R Syllables
- One vowel followed by an r; the vowel sound is controlled by the
r.
- Vowels + R: ar (star), ir (shirt), or (fork),
ur (surf), er (fern).
2. Goals of Instruction: Read and Spell
- Closed syllables.
- Vowel-Consonant-e syllables.
- Open syllables.
- Vowel Teams.
- Vowel + R syllables: spark, birth, porch, burst, nerve.
- Vowel + R plus Closed, VCe, Open, and/or Vowel Team syllables:
perhaps, forgave, remark, charcoal, thirteen.
3. Additional Considerations
- Suffixes: er, or, ar as endings say /er/.
