1.  Vowel+R Syllables

• One vowel followed by an r; the vowel sound is controlled by the r.
• Vowels + R:   ar (star),   ir (shirt),   or (fork),   ur (surf),   er (fern).

2.  Goals of Instruction: Read and Spell

• Closed syllables.
• Vowel-Consonant-e  syllables.
• Open syllables.
• Vowel Teams.
• Vowel + R syllables:   spark, birth, porch, burst, nerve.
• Vowel + R plus Closed, VCe, Open, and/or Vowel Team syllables:   perhaps, forgave, remark, charcoal, thirteen.

3.  Additional Considerations

• Suffixes:   er, or, ar as endings say /er/.
